Aug 02, 2018 — Big Baldy is a hump at the western base of Mount Timpanogos. It's easily overlooked since it's pressed against the formidable Wasatch peaks, but it's a nice hike. Starting from the Dry Canyon Trailhead, I headed up the well-maintained trail past cool rock formations and into the meadowy base at the southern side of Big Baldy. You can do this hike as an out-and-back by using the official trail, which wraps around to Big Baldy's north side. I used this as my descent, but prefered to make the hike into a loop. To do this, a social trail leads off the Dry Canyon Trail and ascends steeply along the south ridge of Big Baldy. This is a great workout to a beautiful viewpoint, but it's quite steep and relentless. The social trail is easy enough to follow the whole way to the summit of Big Baldy, where the views toward Mount Timpanogos are nice. I continued along the official trail around the north side of Big Baldy and headed back down Dry Canyon.
