Sep 12, 2017 — Just outside of Boulder is the super-popular Chautauqua Park, which has a wonderful trail system. Tara and I set out to tackle the super fun scramble on Class 4 slabs on the Second Flatiron. Starting along the Chautauqua Trail up to the Flatirons Loop Trail, but rather than ascend the more standard hike leading to the top of the Flatirons , we continued south to the base of the Second Flatiron. The scramble can be kept Class 4, but the exposure becomes more and more severe as you progress up the slabs. Sections can easily be made into low Class 5, which I was careful to avoid doing. Once at the top of the Second Flatiron (or what seems to be the end of the scramble), we dropped to the right (north) and took the Flatirons 1/2 Trail back.
I've included some icy photos from my first visit to the Flatirons back in 2012 when I followed the main trail, mostly for my own memory.
Please consider helping me out if you find my site useful. I'm not sponsored, so all site fees are out-of-pocket and my time preparing these trip reports is unpaid. You can also hire me as a web developer. I really appreciate it!
If you find my site helpful, please help me replace my many broken cameras, fund my website fees (hosting, APIs, security), or just support my countless hours of work. I pay for all expenses myself, and all trip reports I post are unpaid and unsponsored, so any support is really appreciated!
If using PayPal, please select their option for "Sending to a friend" so they don't take out fees, thank you.
My site is free to use, but consider sending me a few bucks to help keep it running. Thanks in advance!
