May 15, 2018 — Viejas Mountain sort of embodies the typical terrain of this area of Southern California. The trail leads steeply up Viejas Mountain, passing by lots of white boulders and scrubby plant life. I'd recommend doing this hike when it's less hot out due to its lack of shade and potential for hiding rattlesnakes. Occasionally I found the hike had a bit of encroaching brush, likely because it's not an official trail. It has lots of short switchbacks as it leads up the peak from the west. There were nice views of San Diego and Pacific Ocean fog. It's a well-maintained trail and you can't get lost. The views from the summit are really nice.
