May 19, 2016 — Bearfence Mountain is a short hike within Shenandoah National Park, but is unique for its scrambling. The blue-blazed trail starts from the trailhead and heads to the north ridge of Bearfence Mountain, where wooden stairs lead to the start of the scramble. The scramble is short and fun and sort of a rare occurence out east, and it leads to Bearfence Mountain's pretty summit for great views. I had fog, but I'm sure it's a nice overlook. If you want to see the viewpoint and skip the fun scramble, at a junction toward the start of the hike that avoids the rock-hopping.
For more scrambling with a larger objective, check out nearby Old Rag Mountain.
