Jun 21, 2018 — Blood Mountain is accessible via a more popular section of the Appalachian Trail from the east, but I wanted more elevation gain and some solitude, so I started out from Vogel State Park. It's unclear where to park, so just park at the visitor center and walk to the trailhead. Follow a series of well-marked trails, following the Coosa Backcountry Trail for a while before getting to the Duncan Ridge Trail, leading to the Appalachian Trail, and then to the summit. There is a shelter on the summit, and a short scramble to get a view on the true summit, but if you continue a bit farther east, you'll get to a much nicer overlook.
On the way down, you could take the Bear Hair Trail to make this a partial loop, but I didn't because it was raining and getting quite dark.
