Apr 19, 2024 — The San Diego National Wildlife Refuge in southern California was established to protect sensitive habitats and species, particularly those facing threats from urbanization. Lexington Peak is a minor lump best accessed from within the refuge that offers a bit of adventure within the otherwise sprawl of San Diego suburbia since no trails lead to its summit. I parked at the end of a neighborhood and hiked north on a series of trails leading to the peak's brushy base. Once the trail seemed to bend away I continued through the brush along its southern slope.
Overall it wasn't a horrible bushwhack, but there were large patches of shrubs that I needed to maneuver around. It wasn't a particularly steep ascent, but I took my time to avoid stepping on venomous critters and to regularly check for ticks. I wasn't thrilled to find a half dozen of the suckers on me, but I guess that's often the result of bushwhacking. The views were cute from the brushy summit of Lexington Peak, and I questioned briefly why I chose to hike this weird peak when my goal for this trip was to just enjoy pleasant trails.
