I believe the abandoned bunker pictured below is now closed to the public.
Jul 08, 2010 — From the parking lot I followed a wooden boardwalk to the beach, continuing along the sand to a really nice viewpoint of the Sandy Hook Bay and looking over into the Atlantic Highlands. The first time I saw the abandoned bunker here as a kid I was thrilled and thought it was so cool. The concrete structure that was once part of the military base at Gateway National Recreation Area is an almost mysterious contrast to the beach.
The multi-use trail from the bunker parking lot to the Sandy Hook lighthouse is paved and there are a lot of people and cars in the summer. This is a popular destination for beachgoers, but the history is worth checking out even if the beach isn't really your thing.
