Sep 23, 2012 — Badlands National Park in South Dakota was kind of a great climax to the past few days of driving. I had gone from flat, and then to hills, and finally this canyon-like, dusty National Park. Walking off the road and into the Badlands was a necessary task, though at first a little daunting. I didn't see one person for the 2-3 hours I was out alone in the desert. Found some beautiful rocks and bones on the cracked ground, and was completely awe-stricken the entire time. Though not an official hike, exploring off the roads in the Badlands is definitely worth it, specifically this section known as the Yellow Mounds Overlook where the badlands formations keep going for what seems forever. There aren't any people, and seeing the mounds close-up is neat.
