Introduction to the Northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains

The northern portion of the Sangre de Cristo Range, located in southern Colorado, is a majestic and rugged mountain range known for its stunning landscape and unique geology. Stretching approximately 230 miles, the range forms a dramatic backdrop against the high plains and offers a diverse array of geological features.

The landscape of the Sangre de Cristo Range is characterized by towering peaks, deep valleys, and alpine meadows. Some of the highest peaks in Colorado, including Blanca Peak and Crestone Peak, are found in this range. The ruggedness of the terrain and the sheer vertical relief of the peaks create a breathtaking panorama.

Geologically, the Sangre de Cristo Range is primarily composed of Precambrian and Paleozoic rock formations. These ancient rocks provide a window into the geological history of the region, with exposed layers dating back millions of years. The range has undergone significant uplift and erosion over time, resulting in the creation of deep canyons, steep cliffs, and jagged ridges.

One notable feature of the Sangre de Cristo Range is its abundance of alpine lakes and glacial cirques nestled within the high mountain valleys. The cirques, formed by glacial erosion, are characterized by steep-walled amphitheaters that showcase the effects of ancient ice movement.

The Sangre de Cristo Range also boasts a unique geological feature known as the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. The dunes were formed by the accumulation of sand carried by winds from the San Luis Valley and deposited against the mountains. This juxtaposition of sandy desert against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks creates a striking contrast.
