Sep 28, 2017 — This was actually the first canyon I ever did (cough with a guide cough) years ago, and I was super excited to try it again, this time of course without the guide. Yankee Doodle Hollow (aka Yankee Doodle Canyon) is a great beginner canyon with lots of opportunities for stemming and a few downclimbs in a gorgeous red sandstone slot. The trailhead can be reached by any vehicle, though sedans might struggle. An initial first big rappel brings you into the canyon's bottom. Past this rappel, you can likely downclimb all obstacles, though some people may prefer to at least have a handline. We encountered a lot more water than anticipated, and Brent had to get his jeans wet. *shrug*
Once the narrows open up a bit, look on the left for a long slab, the exit ramp (Class 3). It can definitely feel a bit scary for people not used to scrambling on sandstone slab, but it's not difficult. Past the initial slab, Class 2 brings you onto a social trail and up to the forest road above where you can then proceed back west to the trailhead. This is a short canyon, so you might want to include nearby Boltergeist Canyon into the day.
