May 18, 2020 — Fossil Peak ended up being a nice add-on hike. The road to the trailhead was great for mid-clearance vehicles, its only difficulty being brush growing between the double-track that might knock lower cars' bumper. From my parking spot (just a minor pull-off), I headed up a brushy slope and was happy to try out my snake gaiters. This lower elevation peak had me a little scared of rattlers this late in the year, so I was willing to risk looking like a nerd to avoid a bite. I saw no snakes, but was happy to have gaiters because the low brush kept swiping my ankles and I was protected. A mile of brushy walking led to the base of my chosen ascent slope. It quickly got steep and toward the end I had to scramble on Class 2 rockiness. It ended up being pretty fun, and I was happy to have some rocks to play on after a few days of mostly central Nevada brushy peaks. Once on the summit ridge, I headed to the high point, passing potential for Class 3, but easily able to keep the route Class 2. Great 360 degree views. I heard some very loud military-related booms from the base nearby. Lovely.
